Chinese police have arrested a man who allegedly utilized artificial intelligence (AI) technology to generate fake news of a train accident and shared it on multiple online accounts through ChatGPT. This is reportedly the first arrest in China for ChatGPT misuse. Police detained the suspect, surnamed Hong, for producing false and misleading information using AI technology. Cybersecurity officers in Kongtong county detected a fabricated news article that claimed nine individuals died in a local train crash on April 25 through the Baijiahao platform. Hong is suspected of picking quarrels and provoking trouble and may face a maximum sentence of five years. China’s top internet regulator has expressed concern that uncontrolled development and use of deep synthesis technology may cause its exploitation in criminal endeavors such as online defamation or scams.
