Microsoft: Microsoft investigating Windows 11 ‘unsupported processor’ update error

Microsoft rolled out the latest KB5029351 update for its Windows 11 OS earlier this week. This update includes the usual monthly fixes. However, the update is reportedly causing issues for some PCs that include MSI motherboards. According to a report by Verge, some Windows 11 PC users have reported an issue after installing the update. The report mentions that the tech giant is currently investigating the reports of a Blue Screen of Death issue which is popping up a “UNSUPPORTED_PROCESSOR” error message
A support note on Microsoft’s Windows health centre reads: “We are presently investigating to determine if this is an issue caused by Microsoft. We will provide an update when more information is available.”
How this issue is affecting Windows 11 users
As per the report, the issue appeared on a Windows 11 gaming PC that featured an Intel Core i9-13900KS chipset on an MSI MPG Z690 Carbon Wi-Fi motherboard. Multiple Reddit users have also reported the same BSOD issue that started appearing after installing the update. The affected systems were all running Intel chips on MSI motherboards with the latest BIOS updates applied.

What Microsoft is doing to fix the issue
The report mentions that after experiencing the BSOD error, Windows 11 can recover and roll back the patch. Microsoft also seems to be pulling this particular update from affected systems. However, the update is still available for everyone to download. The update went through Microsoft’s Windows Insider testing, into the Release Preview and became available for Windows 11 users before issues were reported.
What is causing the problem
The report didn’t reveal the specific cause of the problem, but it might be related to MSI’s latest BIOS updates. These updates were rolled out as a preparation for Intel’s upcoming 14th Gen desktop CPUs, codenamed Raptor Lake-S Refresh.
MSI’s support notes state that the round of BIOS updates for Z690 and Z790 motherboards were recently rolled out to “support next-gen CPUs”. The affected Reddit users are all on the most recent MSI BIOS update. One of the users also noted that downgrading the BIOS update allowed the latest Windows 11 update to install.
