Microsoft is killing its Siri rival, here’s why

Microsoft is set to discontinue its AI-based assistant, Cortana, by the end of the year. In a recent update to the Cortana standalone app on Windows 11, Microsoft has chosen to stop the app from working, rather than improving its features or user experience.

This decision was officially announced earlier this year and has now been implemented through the latest update. However, this change currently only affects Windows 11 Insider users in Dev and Canary channels. It is expected that Cortana will stop working on other insider builds in the future, eventually leading to the app’s discontinuation for all PC users.

After the update, the Cortana app displays the message “Cortana in Windows as a standalone app is deprecated” along with a “Learn More” button that redirects users to the support page.

Impact on users

This decision is unlikely to affect many users, as Cortana is not heavily emphasized in Windows 11. According to the support page, the discontinuation only applies to Cortana as a standalone app on Windows, while Cortana will continue to function on other services such as Outlook, Teams, and Microsoft.

The alternative to consider

With Cortana being phased out of Windows, there is currently no AI-based assistant available. However, users can opt for the Amazon Alexa app as a substitute. Additionally, Microsoft is developing Windows Copilot, which is expected to provide better features, functionality, and integration compared to Cortana. However, Copilot is still in the development phase and its full integration into the operating system may take some time.
