Michael Cera Contemplated Leaving Acting Following the Release of this Cult-Classic Film

At the age of 19, Michael Cera experienced the immense pressures of fame after achieving widespread recognition for his roles in “Juno” and “Superbad.” However, this newfound fame led him into a crisis, pushing him to the brink of quitting acting altogether. As Cera prepares to make his return to the big screen in the highly-anticipated film “Barbie,” he reflects on the struggles he faced in handling fame at such a young age, describing himself as feeling “uncomfortable” in his own skin. The success of “Juno” and “Superbad” in 2007, both critically and commercially, catapulted Cera into the spotlight, grossing $232.3 million and $170.8 million respectively.

In an interview with The Guardian, Cera opens up about his difficulty in navigating the challenges of fame. He reveals that he didn’t know how to handle walking down the street and that fame made him feel paranoid and strange. While there were many positive aspects of fame, such as meeting incredible people, Cera also experienced negative energies that he wasn’t equipped to handle. He specifically mentions dealing with intoxicated fans as a challenging aspect of fame, explaining that while their enthusiasm can be uplifting, it can also have toxic effects. Additionally, Cera emphasizes that being young exacerbated these issues, as people were less respectful of his boundaries and personal space. He confesses that he struggled to establish his own boundaries and constantly felt under the spotlight, describing it as a constant burning feeling.

The overwhelming experience almost drove Cera to quit acting. He reached a point where he wanted to avoid taking on roles that would further increase his fame, even turning down an opportunity to host “Saturday Night Live.” He admits to going through a crisis and not enjoying the intense level of attention he was receiving. Despite these setbacks, the experience provided Cera with valuable insights into what he truly wanted from his career. He realized that he wanted to be a working actor who could enjoy his day-to-day life and the world he had created for himself.

Fortunately, Cera persevered and continued acting. He was already committed to playing the lead role in Edgar Wright’s “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” following “Superbad,” and he didn’t want to let the project go. The film became a cult favorite, and Cera and Wright are set to collaborate again on an animated adaptation of the original graphic novel for Netflix. The upcoming series will feature the return of original cast members Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Aubrey Plaza, Brie Larson, and Chris Evans.

Cera can be seen in Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie,” which will be released in theaters on July 21. Watch the trailer below for a glimpse of his performance.
