Meta, the parent company of Facebook, is investing heavily in artificial intelligence (AI) and has recently previewed some of its AI tools to its staff. This took place at the first all-hands meeting since the beginning of the pandemic in the Hacker Square pavilion at its Menlo Park headquarters. The chatbot and other tools demonstrated are not yet consumer-facing products, but CEO Mark Zuckerberg is excited about the “incredible breakthroughs” the company has made recently.
Meta also demonstrated how AI tools could enhance Instagram. The company showed how its technology could modify user photos with simple text prompts and create emoji stickers for messaging services. These technologies will also be introduced on WhatsApp and Messenger, where AI agents with different personalities and capabilities will assist users.
Meta has invested in infrastructure to support and develop its AI innovations, and its image generation model is poised to enable users to create stickers, change the aspect ratio of a picture, or turn a picture into a painting. Meta’s VP of AI, Ahmad Al-Dahle, is quoted as saying, “with AI-generated stickers, our users can have infinitely more options for self-expression, cultural representations, and even trend relevance.”
Meta is also introducing a new productivity assistant called Metamate, which will answer employee queries and perform tasks. Despite the recent layoffs, CEO Mark Zuckerberg believes that Meta will play an important role in the AI industry and in bringing this technology to billions of people in new ways that other companies have not yet explored.
