Meta Quest VR headsets gain and lose features with latest update

Meta has released build 60.0 for the Quest VR headsets. The new software brings a range of improvements to the devices, including higher clock speeds for the Quest Pro with an up to 34% increase in CPU and 19% in GPU when Dynamic Resolution is switched on. Other improvements have been made to Safe Browsing and end-to-end encryption for cloud backup across all headsets.

Also included in build 60.0 are three new Horizon Home environments and a new utility app, Layout, which makes it easier to set up your space; for example, you can measure the square footage of your room. An update to profiles allows you to quickly see shared app interests or connections if this information is made public. Plus, Meta says it has made various improvements to Bluetooth settings, including fixing several bugs. The Public Test Channel (PTC) now invites Quest 3 users to beta test software before a public release, with details on how to sign up provided on the company’s website.

It is worth noting that Meta is discontinuing the phone notifications feature, meaning users can no longer view mobile phone notifications while wearing the headset. It remains unclear why the company has taken this decision. However, you could still check your phone when using Passthrough, now allowing you to view your surroundings while some apps load. Meta notes that it has begun to roll out the update to Quest headsets, though it has yet to indicate how quickly the new software will reach all eligible devices; build 60.0 is for the Meta Quest 3, Meta Quest Pro and Meta Quest 2.
