Last week, Instagram launched its rival app Threads, which has quickly gained over 100 million users and become a popular success. However, the app’s availability in the European Union has been conspicuously absent. Instagram has now provided an explanation for the delay in launching Threads in certain parts of Europe. According to Meta spokesperson Christine Pai, the app has been delayed due to “upcoming regulatory uncertainty” caused by the EU’s new Digital Markets Act (DMA) guidelines.
While Meta has not directly blamed the EU’s strict rules, Instagram head Adam Mosseri hinted at them. The DMA prohibits tech companies like Meta from combining data collected from various apps such as Instagram, Facebook, and Threads. In a podcast with The New York Times, Mosseri emphasized the need for processes and technology to ensure data security and verification.
The DMA establishes specific criteria for identifying major online platforms as “gatekeepers” and aims to address concerns associated with large online platforms in a targeted manner. The new rules will require gatekeepers to follow certain guidelines in their everyday operations, including allowing third-party interoperability in specific situations, providing business users with access to their data, offering advertising companies verification tools, and enabling business users to promote their offers outside the gatekeeper’s platform.
Meanwhile, in other regions, the Threads app has experienced tremendous growth and officially reached 100 million users. It has become the fastest-growing app, surpassing ChatGPT’s two-month milestone.
