Social media giant Meta Platforms has entered the generative AI product race, announcing that it will start testing AI-powered ad tools that can create image backgrounds and variations of written text. A “testing playground” called the AI Sandbox will be made available to a select group of advertisers, but Meta hasn’t specified how many advertisers will have access to it initially. The company plans to grant access to more advertisers in July and integrate some of the features into general-purpose ad products later in the year. This marks the first time that Facebook and Instagram owner Meta has rolled out products that use generative AI technology, which mines vast stores of past data to generate new content. The announcement came a day after Alphabet’s Google said it would start offering integrations of the technology in its search, email, and photo products.
