McDonald’s Global Restaurants To Integrate Google Cloud Technology

McDonald’s taste and Google’s tech meet up for a visionary partnership to amp up restaurant efficiency.

McDonald’s Corporation and Google have unveiled plans for multi-year global partnership to integrate Google Cloud technology into thousands of McDonald’s restaurants worldwide. This collaboration marks a major stride for McDonald’s in evolving its restaurant technology platform, aiming to set a new industry standard for sophistication and productivity. The collaboration will see McDonald’s harnessing a spectrum of Google Cloud’s hardware, data and AI technologies to expedite innovation and enhance customer, restaurant team and employee experiences.

Brian Rice, McDonald’s Executive Vice President and Global Chief Information Officer, expressed optimism about the growth potential in their digital business. He highlighted that the partnership with Google Cloud capitalizes on McDonald’s size and scale to develop capabilities and implement solutions swiftly.

“Connecting our restaurants worldwide to millions of datapoints across our digital ecosystem means tools get sharper, models get smarter, restaurants become easier to operate, and most importantly, the overall experience for our customers and crew gets even better,” Rice stated.

This partnership will introduce significant advancements in McDonald’s restaurant and customer platforms, including updates to its mobile app and self-service kiosks worldwide. McDonald’s is set to employ edge computing from Google Cloud, enabling high-powered computing and information storage within individual restaurants.

Google Distributed Cloud, combining hardware and software, will be deployed in thousands of McDonald’s locations. This setup will allow the use of cloud-based applications alongside in-house software and AI solutions. The edge computing capabilities are expected to offer insights into equipment performance, streamline operations and simplify processes for staff, allowing them to concentrate on customer service. McDonald’s is set to become the largest global foodservice retailer to utilize these new features of Google Distributed Cloud, with hardware and software upgrades beginning next year.

The partnership establishes a dedicated Google Cloud team in Chicago, working closely with McDonald’s global innovation center, Speedee Labs. Together, they will focus on applying generative AI to key business priorities, aiming to create innovative experiences for both crew and customers. This collaboration aims to leverage McDonald’s convenience and value with Google Cloud’s AI and technology expertise.

Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, emphasized that the partnership would empower McDonald’s to transform its business and customer experiences. He stated that pairing the iconic brand, size and scale of McDonald’s with Google Cloud’s deep history in AI and technology innovation will redefine how this industry works and what people expect when they dine out.
