Mattel Action Figure Brings Steven Spielberg’s ‘Jurassic Park’ to Life

Famed director Steven Spielberg has an impressive list of accolades including three Academy Awards, an AFI Life Achievement Award, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. However, he is about to receive an honor he has never received before – his very own action figure. Mattel, the renowned toy manufacturer, will be offering a Steven Spielberg action figure at this year’s San Diego Comic Con.

The news, reported by IGN, reveals that Mattel’s Steven Spielberg action figure will be part of its offerings for the 30th anniversary of the iconic film Jurassic Park. This carefully crafted collectible will capture the likeness of Spielberg circa 1993, complete with his signature sunglasses, jeans, ballcap, and an Andy Warhol-inspired dinosaur T-shirt. The figure will come with additional accessories including a director’s chair, a movie camera, and a poseable Dilophosaurus, the venom-spitting dinosaur that famously dispatched the character Dennis Nedry (played by Wayne Knight) in the film. The set will be packaged in a special box that doubles as a functioning clapperboard.

PJ Lewis, the Vice President and Global Head of Action Figures at Mattel, expressed the company’s excitement about this unique action figure. Lewis stated, “To celebrate the 30th anniversary, we wanted to honor the visionary that brought Jurassic Park to the big screen. Spielberg is a legend and we’ve never seen an action figure of him before. He is just as much a part of the legacy as the dinosaurs and characters in the film. The team created the first-ever action figure of Steven Spielberg based on a behind-the-scenes photo from filming Jurassic Park.” This exclusive set will be available for $30.00 at Mattel’s SDCC booth, with limited quantities also being offered on their website.

Lights, Camera, Action Figures!

Spielberg will be joining his longtime friend George Lucas, who already has several Star Wars action figures made in his likeness. These include figures based on his blue-skinned cameo in Revenge of the Sith, one as Rebel pilot “Jorg Sacul”, and two “disguised” as Stormtroopers. Unfortunately, other members of the “Movie Brats” such as Francis Ford Coppola, Brian DePalma, and Martin Scorsese have not yet been immortalized as action figures. However, if you desire an action figure of a more contemporary director, you can find plastic representations of Jon Favreau as the MCU character Happy Hogan.

In addition to the Steven Spielberg figure, Mattel will also be offering another Jurassic Park themed collectible at SDCC. This time, their Hot Wheels brand will release a die-cast metal Jurassic Jeep in the iconic red-and-gray color scheme. The Jeep will come with a miniature Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) in the back, allowing fans to recreate the thrilling scene where Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern) and Robert Muldoon (Bob Peck) outmaneuver a Tyrannosaurus while transporting the injured Malcolm to safety. The Jurassic Jeep will be packaged in a special diorama box and will be available for $30.00.

The Hammond Collection Steven Spielberg action figure will be exclusively available at booth #2945 during the San Diego Comic Con from July 20 to July 23. Additionally, it can also be purchased on Mattel’s website starting July 21. Stay tuned to Collider for further updates and watch their interview with the iconic director himself, Steven Spielberg.
