Marvel Returns Rights to Stan Lee’s Femizons; Transfers Ownership to New Publisher

The Omniverse Collection of IP comprises more than a hundred characters and storylines created by the legendary Stan Lee, including the Femizons.

In 1971, Marvel Comics introduced Savage Tales #1, a groundbreaking black-and-white anthology comic that featured Ka-Zar and the debut of Man-Thing. In this issue, readers were also introduced to the Femizons or The Sisterhood (the name varied on the cover and inside the comic) which was created and written by the late Stan Lee and illustrated by John Romita Sr, who recently passed away.

This comic was Stan Lee’s interpretation of the “women’s liberation” movement, inspired by feminists and their activism. It portrayed a future fantasy world where women had established dominance. The issue was discontinued after its first release and when it returned, the Femizons were no longer featured. However, it appears that they are making a comeback now.

The Omniverse Collection of intellectual property includes more than a hundred characters and storylines that Stan Lee created at Stan Lee Media between 1999 and 2000. Stan Lee Holdings now claims ownership of these properties, which include Slam-Girl, The 7th Portal, The Drifter, and The Accuser. Surprisingly, the rights to the Femizons have also reverted back to Stan Lee’s company based on an employment contract that was previously unknown.

Stan Lee Media was established in 1999 as a prominent internet animation studio in Hollywood. It employed numerous writers, artists, and animators to create original superheroes for the then-new medium of the internet. However, the studio faced financial challenges due to the dot com bust and ultimately shut down. Stan Lee Holdings was subsequently set up to acquire the assets.

It is important to note that the Omniverse Collection created by Stan Lee, SLH Ltd, or SPACEMOB is not associated with Marvel, POW!, Genius Brands, the Estate of Stan Lee, or Stan Lee Universe.

Shirrel Rhoades, who served as the executive vice president of Marvel Entertainment in 1996 and later became the publisher of Marvel Comics, is now the director of Stan Lee Holdings. He is working alongside Spacemob CEO Eric Keith, who has secured the rights to these Stan Lee IPs. Spacemob will serve as the Business Development, Creative Development, and Business Affairs Agency for Stan Lee Holdings, aiming to bring these characters and stories to superhero fans worldwide as a tribute to Stan Lee’s legacy.

Spacemob acknowledges the significant role Stan Lee played in the early days of the internet as an entertainment medium. As the Chairman and Chief Creative Officer of Stan Lee Media, he pioneered the production of the internet’s first high-concept animated “webisodes.” Slam-Girl, one of the long-lost creations, was intended to be Stan Lee’s female counterpart to Spider-Man. It is now being transformed into a series of NFTs.

Shirrel Rhoades expresses his honor in curating Stan Lee’s later works and highlights the discovery of previously unknown characters that were designed for the Internet Age. These characters, including Slam-Girl and The Drifter, will undoubtedly enhance Stan Lee’s reputation as one of America’s greatest creators.

While there may be some debate regarding Stan Lee’s reputation, especially following the release of a controversial documentary on Disney+, it is intriguing to note that he had already laid the groundwork for the reversal of his own rights decades ago. As other comic book creators continue to fight for their rights, Stan Lee’s foresight in signing over his rights to his own creations is remarkable.
