Major Wisconsin Concert Cancelled Due to Canadian Wildfire Smoke

In my writing, I enjoy intertwining my passions for weather, climate, science, sports, and music. This piece is a perfect example of that. Currently, parts of Quebec and Ontario are being devastated by wildfires, and the prevailing wind patterns are carrying the smoke into the United States once again. Chicago recently experienced the worst air quality in the world, with Detroit following closely behind. As of now, the air quality levels in the Midwest are dangerously high, and these conditions are gradually spreading eastward. Tonight, two of my favorite bands, Garbage and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, were supposed to perform in Madison, Wisconsin. However, they have made the wise decision to cancel the show.

According to NOAA’s Weather Prediction Center discussion on Wednesday, “….Wildfire smoke from Canada will reduce air quality over parts of the Upper/Middle Mississippi Valley, Great Lakes, Western Ohio Valley, Central Appalachians, and Mid-Atlantic, prompting Air Quality Warnings over the area.” It feels like we just witnessed a similar situation a few weeks ago in the Northeast. Oh wait, we actually did.

The air quality index in the eastern United States has reached critically high levels. Consequently, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds and Garbage, who are both immensely popular bands, had to cancel their Wednesday night show in Madison, Wisconsin. While it may disappoint their fans, it was undoubtedly the right decision, and I commend the bands for prioritizing the health of their audience.

The smoke hazard in the affected regions is particularly dangerous for vulnerable populations, individuals with certain medical conditions, and communities of color. Hence, it surprised me to see numerous sports events and outdoor activities proceed as scheduled yesterday.

As the week progresses, the air quality conditions will continue to pose health risks for a significant portion of the eastern United States. Additionally, many parts of the country will be grappling with scorching temperatures in the triple digits over the Fourth of July weekend. Similar to smoke, heat is also a health hazard that is often underestimated or overlooked by many people.

The Canadian fires are also impacting Europe. According to NASA’s Earth Observatory website, “Smoke from wildland fires, which have been burning in the Canadian province of Quebec for weeks, has crossed the Atlantic Ocean and darkened skies in southwestern Europe.”

One of Garbage’s biggest hits, “Only Happy When It Rains,” perfectly reflects the situation where smoke has forced the cancellation of their show. Regions affected by smoke and Europe could definitely use some rainfall. Unfortunately, the changing climate is likely to exacerbate the prevalence of wildfires, deteriorating air quality, and extreme heat. This month seems to be preparing us for the immediate and distant challenges we will face in the future.
