Low-end PCs left in limbo as Cyberpunk 2077 renders them obsolete

The upcoming expansion of Cyberpunk 2077 called Phantom Liberty is bound to push the limits of what a PC can handle even further. However, it turns out that it’s not just the expansion that demands more power from your computer as the game’s base configuration is also receiving an update on its system requirements. As a result, many people might need to upgrade their PCs to be able to play the game comfortably.

Updated system requirements for Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty.

CD Projekt Red, the studio behind Cyberpunk 2077, recently announced updated system requirements for the game, ranging from 30 frames per second (fps) at 1080p on low settings to 4K on Overdrive mode. Although these changes are labeled as Phantom Liberty, the forum post clarifies that they will also affect the base game.

To play the game at the very minimum, which means 30 fps on low settings at 1080p, you’ll now need at least an Intel Core i7-6700 or an AMD Ryzen 5 1600, and an Nvidia GTX 1060 or Radeon RX 580, along with 12GB RAM and an SSD. These updated requirements indicate the rising RAM requirements in modern games.

Playing at 1080p and high settings with a comfortable 60 fps requires higher specs, such as an Intel Alder Lake processor or an AMD Ryzen 7 7800X, and an RTX 2060 Super, Radeon RX 5700 XT, or an Intel Arc A770 GPU. The other presets have higher requirements all across the board, culminating in the maximum preset which demands an Intel Core i9-12900, Ryzen 9 7900X, 16GB RAM, and an Nvidia RTX 4080, one of the best graphics cards currently available.

Do You Need to Upgrade Your PC?

While many gamers were not expecting an update to the specs for the base game, it’s not surprising that the Phantom Liberty DLC’s system requirements have gone up. If you’re planning to play at 4K with ray tracing, Nvidia’s DLSS 3 is necessary, and a GPU like RTX 4080 does a great job running the game. However, even the previous-generation RX 6950XT does a decent job playing the game at 4K if you forgo ray tracing.

For now, CD Projekt Red gave players “at least 90 days” before the update drops and the frame rates decrease alongside it. The studio also notes that while the previous minimum requirements may still work with the game, they will discontinue active support for them and stop testing the game on those setups.
