Lords of the Fallen Reboot Unveils Intense Gameplay Trailer; Set to Release in October

Lords of the Fallen, the highly anticipated reboot of the 2014 souls-like game, has finally received a release date and a gameplay trailer that clearly shows its Dark Souls influence. Developed by Studio Hexworks, the game is set to launch on October 13 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X. Powered by Unreal Engine 5, Lords of the Fallen serves as a spiritual successor to its predecessor and boasts a vast interconnected world that is five times larger than the original game. However, one of the most peculiar aspects of this title is its name change history. Initially, it was called “The Lords of the Fallen” to avoid confusion with the 2014 version. However, earlier this year, it underwent another rebranding and dropped the “The” from its name. This can be perplexing for owners of the previous game, as the publisher remains the same.

The gameplay trailer of Lords of the Fallen opens with a dramatic screen, setting the stage with the line: “Mournstead has fallen. Its great army decimated by the legions of Adyr, the Demon God.” Following the familiar formula of the souls-like genre, players find themselves thrust into a grim and decaying world, where they must fight against insurmountable odds in order to restore hope and glory to the region. The game offers a solid RPG foundation, starting with a character builder and a choice of nine classes, including Knight, Rogue, and Fire Apprentice. As the game progresses, players can shape their character’s playstyle through weapon discovery and other leveling options, although specific details regarding these aspects are limited at the moment.

The trailer introduces the protagonist, known as The Dark Crusader, who accepts an offer from the unnamed gold-faced ruler of Mournstead to defeat Adyr. The ruler points to a mysterious glove, presumably an artifact that grants special abilities, while explaining the threat posed by Adyr’s darkness. The Lords of the Fallen trailer then proceeds to showcase an array of epic boss battles, ranging from monstrous creatures to fiery warriors. One particular boss fight strongly resembles Knight Artorias from the Dark Souls DLC, featuring acrobatic maneuvers and spinning jump attacks.

Utilizing a trusty, blue-tinted lantern, players will intermittently travel between two distinct worlds: Axiom, the realm of the living, and Umbral, the realm of the dead. Each realm presents its own set of unique challenges. Though the exact mechanics are not fully clarified in the game’s description on Steam, it suggests a resurrection mechanic similar to that of Demon’s Souls, where players respawn as a spirit-like form with reduced HP until they overcome a boss. However, the mention of a “one final chance” raises some confusion.

The combat showcased in the Lords of the Fallen trailer appears to be faster-paced and more visually striking compared to FromSoftware’s renowned catalog of games. It bears some resemblance to Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty but with a satisfying weightiness to the weapons. According to the description, players can choose from hundreds of brutal weapons or opt for devastating arcane attacks, forsaking metal for magic. Additionally, the game features online co-op functionality, akin to Dark Souls, allowing players to either cooperate or invade other realms and disrupt their progress.

Lords of the Fallen is scheduled to release on October 13 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X.
