Long-awaited battery and charging upgrades expected for Pixel 8 duo

Although the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro have received acclaim as excellent phones overall, their battery and charging specifications leave much to be desired, especially when compared to leading Android Chinese smartphones. Whether or not this is a wise long-term strategy is a topic for another day. However, it is widely agreed that the upcoming Pixel 8 and 8 Pro could greatly benefit from improved battery life and, according to reputable leaker Kamila Wojciechowska, this is precisely what we can expect.
The Pixel 7 features 20W wired charging for its 4,355mAh battery (with a rated capacity of 4,270mAh), while the Pro model offers a slightly faster maximum speed of 23W for its larger 5,000mAh cell (with a rated capacity of 4,926mAh).
For reference, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra boasts a 5,000mAh battery and supports 45W charging, while the Redmi Note 12 Explorer currently holds the title of the world’s fastest charging phone, capable of charging at up to 210W.
Although Google may not be breaking any records with its upcoming releases, it is expected to modestly increase battery capacities and charging speeds.

Rumors suggest that the Pixel 8 will have a larger battery with a rated capacity of 4,485mAh, and may support 24W charging. On the other hand, the Pro model is likely to have a 4,950mAh battery and support 27W wired charging.

Improvements to Pixel 8 and 8 Pro battery and charging

  • Pixel 8: Rated capacity increases from 4,270mAh to 4,485mAh, and charging speed increases from 20W to 24W.
  • Pixel 8 Pro: Rated capacity increases from 4,926mAh to 4,950mAh, and charging speed increases from 23W to 27W.
Although these improvements may seem incremental, it’s important to note that the phones will be powered by the more energy-efficient Tensor G3 chip, meaning the boost in battery life should be noticeable.

Wojciechowska has also revealed that Google’s upcoming phones will support the newer Wi-Fi 7 standard, resulting in higher speeds and improved latency. Additionally, the Pixel 8 Pro could come with an upgraded UWB model, while the non-Pro model will continue to lack this feature.

Lastly, the leaker suggests that the Pixel 8 duo may be available in four new markets: Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, and Portugal. This would bring the total number of countries where the phones are officially available to 21.
