‘Loki’ Directors Celebrate the “Beautiful Tragedy” of His Final Scene

The Big Picture

  • Loki’s character arc in the MCU has showcased his evolution from a hurt and rage-filled individual to a selfless God who understands the bigger picture.
  • Throughout the Loki series, he forms connections and friendships, which are significant aspects of being human. However, he ultimately sacrifices these relationships to fulfill his purpose.
  • In the final episode, Loki commits himself to a life of solitude to protect the multiverse, even though it means being alone and separated from the people he loves. This sacrifice brings him fulfillment despite the tragic ending.

When it comes to moving finales on well-penned character arcs, the creative team behind Loki deserves a round of applause. A staple in the MCU for more than a decade, the hero formerly known as the God of Mischief went from a young man who poured his hurt and rage into all the wrong places to a selfless God who understood the bigger picture. If one were to hold up a clip of Tom Hiddleston’s character from one of his early appearances in Thor or The Avengers to that of the final moments of the hit Disney+ series, the man before them would be unrecognizable to the one from the past. In an interview with Collider’s Therese Lacson, Loki’s directing team, Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson, broke down the absolute beauty and triumph that came with Loki’s shining moment.

Explaining how they brought years of a complex storyline to a head, Benson says,

“We just saw Loki’s journey over all of these movies and all of these TV shows, this character we’ve all grown to love, that something primary to his evolution is that he is becoming more and more human. He’s becoming less and less a sort of archetype of an antagonist or a villain, and more and more gaining his humanity.”

While he’s rubbed elbows with the highest-regarded citizens of Sakaar and helped The Avengers on their quest to stop Thanos, Loki has never really had a strong dedication to a friend group or even a familial unit. However, that all turned around in the show’s second season as he gathered his own little gang of misfits to ensure the safety of time itself. Speaking to that, Benson says:

“Those connections to people, the idea of having friendships, all those things, that is part of what we see is defined as being human. And then once he has that, and he realizes that that is what he wanted all along, that there’s this beautiful tragedy and having to sacrifice it. But also, the sacrifice itself is to be human.”

Loki’s Meaningful Sacrifice in the Season 2 Finale

Stepping into what will now be considered his truest form, the final episode sees Loki taking one for the team, committing himself to a life of solitude at the end of time. Touching on what that act meant to the selfish and conceited character audiences met more than a decade ago, Moorhead says:

“Yeah. And we found it really important that the sacrifice was a real sacrifice, meaning he didn’t just do the act. He also is not able to be given the glory of having done what he’s done. He doesn’t get his friends, he didn’t sacrifice himself and then get to still hang out with his friends. He is fully alone.”

Despite subjecting himself to an eternity away from the people he loves the most in the world, Moorhead hopes that audiences will see the beauty in Loki’s actions. While it may seem like a tragic ending the director says, “He has a smile on his face at the end. And I think that he gets a lot of fulfillment off of what he did.” Although there’s always a chance that we may see more from Hiddleston’s character in the future, for now, the chapter on Loki is closed as he sits at the end of time to protect every life across the multitude of universes.
