Just a few hours ago, three leaked images of Sony’s highly anticipated handheld, codenamed Project Q, surfaced on IMGUR and were subsequently shared on Reddit.
These images offer a sneak peek into the internals of the handheld console when the screen is removed. But the most exciting detail is that Project Q appears to be running on the Android operating system.
Many users had been wondering about the operating system since it was first announced during the last PlayStation Showcase amid months of rumors.
Sony is marketing this console as focused on Remote Play streaming from a PlayStation 5. Here’s the official description:
Project Q is a dedicated device set to launch later this year. It allows you to play any compatible game installed on your PS5 using Remote Play over Wi-Fi. With its vibrant 8-inch LCD screen capable of up to 1080p resolution at 60fps, this device delivers crisp visuals and smooth gameplay streamed from your PS5 when you’re away from your TV.
If Project Q does indeed run on Android (albeit a modified version) rather than a custom OS like the PlayStation Vita, it’s quite possible that modders will find a way to enable streaming applications like GeForce NOW, Shadow, Boosteroid, Amazon Luna, and Xbox Cloud. In that case, the handheld console could be considered a viable alternative to devices like the Logitech G Cloud or the Abxylute.
However, according to insider Tom Henderson, Sony’s upcoming handheld may have subpar battery life of around three to four hours. In comparison, the Logitech G Cloud boasts over twelve hours of gameplay, while the Abxylute offers over eight hours.
One advantage of Project Q is that it includes a fully featured DualSense wireless controller with all of the buttons and functionality, including Adaptive Triggers and Haptic Feedback. However, this will only be useful when streaming PS5 games. While some PC games do support DualSense’s Adaptive Triggers and Haptic Feedback, it’s not currently possible when streaming.
Project Q does not have a specific release window yet, other than a vague “later this year”. It is expected to launch alongside another PlayStation accessory, the first-ever wireless earbuds with Sony’s gaming brand. According to the manufacturer, these earbuds will offer lossless audio with low latency for a high-quality audio experience on both the PlayStation 5 and PC.
