Launching Bipartisan Comics Caucus: Congressman Robert Garcia’s Love for DC Shines Through

Marvel Studios, Lucasfilm, Sony Pictures, Universal Pictures, and Netflix may not be attending SDCC this year, but Robert Garcia will be there!

DC-Loving United States Congressman Robert Garcia plans to fulfill the desires of his comic-loving constituents by launching a bi-partisan initiative at San Diego Comic-Con this year. Garcia took to Twitter to announce the formation of the Congressional Popular Arts Caucus. This caucus could mark a significant connection between the government and the comics industry, reminiscent of Marvel’s collaboration with Northrop-Grumman in an effort to engage young readers for the military-industrial complex.

Garcia did not provide specific details about the Congressional Popular Arts Caucus’s objectives, but he did acknowledge following industry concerns expressed through the #ComicsBrokeMe hashtag.

Will the caucus finally put an end to the long-standing exploitation of creative laborers by the comics industry? And if so, will they tackle comics “journalism” next?

Robert Garcia, elected as Mayor of Long Beach in 2014, made history as the youngest, first openly gay, first Latino, and first Snyderbrony mayor of the city. He used his position to advocate for pro-DC policies, including embedding secret DC fanboy messages in the construction of a new community center and urging the release of Justice League‘s Snyder Cut, which restores director Zack Snyder’s vision after he had to step away from the project due to a personal tragedy. Allegedly, fake feminist Joss Whedon took over the film and replaced Snyder’s epic Superman scenes with ones where Cyborg says “booyah.” However, Snyderbronies, dedicated fans of Zack Snyder, successfully campaigned for Warner Bros to release the Snyder Cut on HBO Max in 2021. Had Garcia held federal office, perhaps we would have seen the Snyder Cut even sooner.

Garcia’s ascent to national power continued as he won the election for California’s newly redrawn 42nd District and took office in 2023. Garcia wasted no time fulfilling a campaign promise—using the congressional reading room at the Library of Congress to borrow some incredible comic issues. This isn’t the first time Garcia has merged his love for superheroes and politics. As the DC-Loving mayor of Long Beach, he famously hid a DC Comics Easter egg in a civic center’s construction.
