Larry David Got Revenge on Roger Ebert in ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’

Larry David, the comedic genius behind shows like Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm, has a knack for using his television series as a vehicle for revenge and catharsis. One notable example of this was his response to film critic Roger Ebert’s scathing review of David’s film Sour Grapes.

Ebert didn’t hold back in his criticism of Sour Grapes, describing it as “unlikable” and a “dead zone.” Larry David, being the master of comedic retaliation that he is, decided to incorporate Ebert into an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm.

In the episode titled “The Grand Opening,” Larry, played by David himself, seeks revenge on a critic named Portico, who bears a striking resemblance to Ebert. During a dodgeball game, Larry throws the ball at Portico, inadvertently breaking both of his thumbs. Larry later finds out that Portico is a food critic who was planning to review his newly opened restaurant. With Portico unable to complete the review due to his injuries, Larry breathes a sigh of relief.

However, Larry soon realizes that Portico’s act of revenge doesn’t end there. The replacement chef that Portico recommends turns out to be a Holocaust survivor with Tourette’s Syndrome, causing chaos and profanity in the restaurant. Although Larry knows he can’t fire the chef due to his past experiences, he stands up for him by joining in the profanity-laden chaos. Surprisingly, the obscene spectacle catapults the restaurant to success.

So, what did Roger Ebert think of this episode? In a response to a fan’s question about how he felt about directors taking his reviews personally, Ebert explained that perhaps Larry David wasn’t specifically targeting him but rather critics in general. He then acknowledged that Sour Grapes was indeed a terrible movie but praised Curb Your Enthusiasm as a wonderful TV show that he genuinely enjoyed, despite wincing at the scene where the critic’s thumbs were broken.

Overall, Larry David’s use of Curb Your Enthusiasm as a means of venting frustrations and getting back at those who wronged him is both clever and cathartic. It’s a true testament to his unique comedic genius and ability to turn personal experiences into hilarious television moments.
