Notable companies such as Apple, Samsung, and HP have halted laptop imports to India, according to Bloomberg.
On August 4th, the Indian government announced new import restrictions on laptops, tablets, and PCs in an effort to promote domestic manufacturing under the “Made in India” initiative.
A notification from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) states that the import of laptops, tablets, all-in-one PCs, ultra-small form factor computers, and servers is now restricted with immediate effect.
Under the new regulations, buyers must obtain licenses for importing laptops and tablets. This requirement applies to all types of computers, including ultra-small PCs and tablets. However, certain types of PCs classified as capital goods are exempt from this requirement.
The notification further explains that import licenses will be exempt for up to 20 items per shipment for purposes such as research and development, testing, benchmarking, evaluation, repair and return, and product development.
Anonymous sources reveal that laptop manufacturers were anticipating government actions to promote domestic production and reduce dependence on imports. However, the sudden imposition of licensing requirements caught the industry by surprise.
Manufacturers are currently in discussions with the government to establish efficient processes for obtaining licenses at a time when there is increased consumer demand due to the upcoming Diwali season and back-to-school sales in the country, sources report.
A senior official from the technology ministry has stated that companies importing laptops, tablets, and other IT products from overseas will have a minimum of one month to apply for import licenses. Additionally, the government is streamlining the application process, aiming to provide approval in as little as one day.
