Nvidia’s highly anticipated RTX 4060 Ti 16GB is set to launch in just a few days. However, there are rumors suggesting that there may be limited availability of this graphics card. This scarcity is not due to another GPU shortage but rather the expectations that the RTX 4060 Ti may not perform as well as other top graphics cards on the market.
The RTX 4060 Ti 16GB is essentially a clone of the RTX 4060, but with double the VRAM. Despite this upgrade, the GPU might face challenges in terms of sales and benchmark results.
This speculation about the lack of support for the RTX 4060 Ti comes from Andreas Schilling, editor of HardwareLuxx, who recently tweeted about the card. According to Schilling, few of Nvidia’s add-in board (AIB) partners are interested in launching the GPU.
In other words, it appears that Nvidia’s board partners have reservations about the success of the RTX 4060 Ti 16GB, which is why there may be a limited selection of non-Founders Edition models. Manufacturers have doubts because the initial version of the RTX 4060 Ti only had 8GB of VRAM, which is insufficient for running modern games at maximum settings. While the 16GB version may alleviate this issue, its narrow 128-bit memory bus could still pose problems.
The main drawback of the RTX 4060 Ti 16GB is its price of $500, which is only $100 less than the RTX 4070. The RTX 4070 outperforms the RTX 4060 Ti 8GB by about 30%, and even with the increased VRAM, the 16GB model is unlikely to come close to matching the performance of the $600 card. The RTX 4060 Ti has the same number of cores and is otherwise identical to the 8GB variant.
Simply put, the RTX 4060 Ti may not provide enough of an improvement to justify its price tag. It is positioned between the RTX 4060 and RTX 4070, making it difficult to justify purchasing. Budget-conscious gamers may opt for the RTX 4060, while those willing to spend more would likely choose the RTX 4070. This hesitation from Nvidia’s AIB partners is understandable given these circumstances.
Therefore, the $500 RTX 4060 Ti finds itself in an awkward position right from the start. It seems that Nvidia’s AIB partners are hesitant to release the GPU in large quantities. Not only is the 16GB RTX 4060 Ti expensive given its specifications, but it also follows two other 4060 cards that have already received price reductions.
If the demand for Nvidia’s latest graphics cards is unsatisfactory, it could bode well for the next generation. Perhaps Nvidia will offer better price-to-performance ratios in its upcoming RTX 5000 graphics cards. For now, we are stuck with the RTX 4060 Ti with 16GB of VRAM, which is reportedly scheduled for release on July 18.
