‘Kraven the Hunter’ Director Says the Superhero Movie Will Be a “Tragedy”

The Big Picture

  • Kraven the Hunter is an upcoming R-Rated film that explores the tragic story of the title character and his relationship with his father, as well as the acquisition of his powers.
  • The movie draws inspiration from the comic-book arc “Kraven’s Last Hunt,” where Kraven assumes Spider-Man’s identity before meeting a tragic end. While the film may have a different ending, it maintains a similar tone.
  • Aaron Taylor Johnson’s portrayal of Kraven emphasizes his love for animals and his role as a protector of the natural world.

Sony Pictures is set to release Kraven the Hunter, featuring Aaron Taylor Johnson in the lead role, as part of their own series of films that rival the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This upcoming R-Rated adaptation of the comic-book is not just an action-packed blood fest, but according to director J. C. Chandor, it is a tragedy with a deeper focus. In an interview with Esquire, Chandor describes the film as “a tragedy.”

“Although Sony may not want me to start with this,” says Chandor, “the film itself is a tragedy. By the end of the movie, if you’ve been paying attention, you won’t expect a happy ending.” This film follows the typical framework of an origin story that serves as a launching pad for most comic-book franchises. The relationship between the title character and his father (played by Russell Crowe) takes center stage, as Kraven acquires his powers and faces off against adversaries like the Rhino (Alessandro Nivola) and the Foreigner (Christopher Abbott).

According to Esquire, the comic-book storyline “Kraven’s Last Hunt” by J. M. DeMatteis provided significant inspiration for the tragic elements of the film. In this story, Kraven, also known as Sergei Kravinoff, takes on Spider-Man’s identity after faking the hero’s death but ultimately chooses not to kill him. However, Kraven meets a grim fate by his own hand. While the movie may not have the same ending as DeMatteis’ comic, it sets a similar tone. Taylor-Johnson has expressed his approach to the role, describing his version of Kraven as “an animal lover” and “a protector of the natural world.”
