Krafton Confirms BGMI Will Make a Comeback in India ‘Soon’ After a 10-Month Ban

Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI) is set to make its comeback in the country, much to the delight of gamers. Korean publisher Krafton has received the green light from the Indian government to resume operations of the immensely popular battle-royale game. Previously, BGMI was banned in July last year due to concerns surrounding privacy and security, leading to its removal from both Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store. This ban had a significant impact on the mobile e-sports scene in India. However, BGMI is now making history as the first app to return among the numerous apps that the government had banned over the past couple of years.

Expressing their gratitude, Sean Hyunil Sohn, CEO of Krafton India, thanked the Indian authorities for allowing the resumption of BGMI’s operations. He also acknowledged the support and patience of the Indian gaming community during the past few months. Sohn eagerly announced that BGMI will soon be available for download, eagerly awaiting the warm welcome of players back to the gaming platform. He also highlighted the remarkable achievement of the game, surpassing 100 million users within a year of its launch in July 2021.

Following the ban of PUBG Mobile, BGMI emerged as an exclusive version specific to India, reigniting the country’s e-sports ecosystem. The game sparked the organization of numerous official and unofficial events, including the prestigious ‘Masters Series’ tournament, which was broadcasted live on Star Sports 2. Global Esports emerged as the victor in this tournament. Vibhor Kukreti, Head Government Affairs at Krafton India, emphasized the responsible nature of Krafton as an organization and their commitment to complying with all applicable regulations. He encouraged users to prioritize their well-being and practice responsible gaming.

Interestingly, BGMI’s return is anticipated to be a trial period of three months to ensure compliance with the rules set by the Indian government. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) will closely monitor the game’s activity during this period. Some adjustments will be made, including a set time limit to restrict playtime and changes to the gore effects. Previously, players could modify the blood color to blue or green, but this change is expected to become permanent.

In addition to BGMI, the Indian government also removed Dead by Daylight Mobile, a co-op survival horror game, from Indian mobile stores earlier this year. Although reasons were not explicitly given, it is presumed that the ban was a result of the game’s Chinese publisher, NetEase, responsible for distributing the game in Southeast Asia, Japan, and Korea. This move aligns with the government’s prior decisions to ban several Chinese apps due to security concerns.

While the release details for Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI) haven’t been announced yet, it is expected to be available for Android and iOS, just like before.
