Kim Kardashian pulls plug on mobile app after nearly 10 years

Kim Kardashian has opted to shut down her mobile game after nearly a decade of generating massive sales.

The reality TV mogul’s “Kim Kardashian: Hollywood” has a shut-off date of April 8, after which point the game will stop working for any current players. A representative confirmed that in-app purchases have already been discontinued, while the game has been removed from Apple’s App Store and Google Play.

The free-to-play mobile game launched in June 2014, enabling fans to create avatars and work to achieve A-list celebrity status. According to CNN, the sale of virtual clothes and accessories helped the app generate $700,000 a day shortly after its debut.

Glu Mobile, the game’s developer, previously said the app was downloaded at least 145 million times and generated $160 million in revenue in its first two years alone.

Now a billionaire, thanks largely to her highly successful Skims shapewear empire, Kardashian said she “will be forever inspired” by the app, but think its the right time to move on.

“I’m so grateful from the bottom of my heart to everyone who has loved and played ‘Kim Kardashian: Hollywood’ in the past 10 years,” Kardashian, 43, said in a statement on Wednesday. “This journey has meant so much to me but I’ve realized that it’s time to focus that energy into other passions. I want to thank the Glu team and the many people behind the scenes who have worked diligently on making it a success.”

Glu published many other celebrity-driven games — for Taylor Swift, celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay, and several of Kardashian’s own family members, including Khloé Kardashian, Kourtney Kardashian and Kris Jenner — before being sold to the San Francisco-headquartered Electronics Arts for $2 billion in 2021.
