‘Jury Duty’ Showrunner Cody Heller Explains the Backup Plan

Throughout the episodes, the unsuspecting protagonist and star, Ronald Gladden, found himself immersed in a fake court case and surrounded by eccentric characters. As a viewer, one could sense moments when Gladden was on the verge of uncovering the truth, with a single word or look from any actor potentially revealing the sham nature of the courtroom proceedings.

In a recent interview with Collider’s Christina Radish, showrunner and executive producer of Jury Duty, Cody Heller, delved into the intricacies of the crew’s contingency plans had the truth been revealed. Heller explained that their main strategy, devised by executive producer Nick Hatton, involved turning the tables on Gladden and asking him to play along after being exposed. Heller stated, “If Ronald [Gladden] found out, we would pull him aside and be like, ‘Okay, you’re right. This is what it is. Can you play along, and now we’re gonna turn it onto the actors?'”

Despite the success of the series, with Gladden remaining oblivious for three weeks, it would have been intriguing to witness the production team scramble to adapt and deceive the actors. Heller described the process as constantly evolving and unpredictable, requiring constant adjustments throughout. Each day on set was filled with excitement due to the ever-changing nature of the show.

Although Gladden was completely caught off guard when the judge, portrayed by Alan Barinholtz, revealed the staged nature of the production, there were moments that felt too surreal for him.
