The current iteration of the DC Universe is expected to end on a disappointing note. Movies such as “Black Adam,” “Shazam! Fury of the Gods,” and “The Flash” have all underperformed at the box office, with “The Flash” potentially causing Warner Bros. to lose a staggering $200 million. It doesn’t look promising for the future either, as “Blue Beetle” is a small-scale film originally intended for HBO Max, and “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” has received negative feedback from test audiences.
However, there is a glimmer of hope for DC fans. James Gunn is set to reboot the universe with his upcoming film “Superman: Legacy” in 2025. Following that, there will be a new lineup of movies featuring fresh takes on DC heroes. But some of the directorial choices for these films have already raised concerns among fans.
Many eyebrows were raised when it was announced that Andy Muschietti, the director of “The Flash,” would helm “The Brave and the Bold.” The disappointment surrounding “The Flash” was largely attributed to Warner Bros. executives interfering with the film and prioritizing nostalgia over a compelling story. This has led to doubts about Muschietti’s ability to deliver a satisfying film. On the other hand, “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” may have struggled at the box office, but it is actually a well-received movie. Director James Mangold, known for his successful films like “Logan,” “Ford v Ferrari,” and “3:10 to Yuma,” is proven to be capable of delivering quality content. However, it seems that his involvement in “Swamp Thing” may be delayed due to his commitment to “Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi.”
A single box office failure doesn’t necessarily spell the end of a director’s career, although it isn’t a desirable outcome. Warner Bros. executives tend to be unpredictable, so it’s possible that these directors may be reassigned to other projects in the near future.
