James Gunn on the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Superhero Overload

In recent news, fans have been excited to discover that the upcoming film “Superman: Legacy” will not only feature David Corenswet’s portrayal of Superman, but also other beloved superheroes. However, some fans have expressed concerns that the movie may become overcrowded with too many superheroes. Addressing these concerns on Threads, director James Gunn reassured fans that the focus will still be on Superman and how the additional characters will enhance his story.

In the past few days, “Superman: Legacy” has announced the casting of Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mr. Terrific, and Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho. One common worry among fans of shared cinematic universes is that a movie might prioritize setting up future installments rather than telling a compelling story. However, Gunn has assured fans that this won’t be the case with “Superman: Legacy,” stating, “I’ve never used one movie to set up another movie. The characters are there to enrich Superman’s story, not to pave the way for separate projects in the franchise. Superman and Lois are the clear protagonists.”

In another post on Threads, Gunn explained how these characters will fit into Superman’s world. “We’re entering a world where superheroes have already existed for quite some time,” Gunn wrote. “They’re a part of one side of his world, just like Lois and Jimmy are a part of another.” While Superman is often depicted as the original superhero in DC Comics, there have been numerous storylines where he is not the first. In modern comic book narratives, the Justice Society superhero group operated during World War II, predating Clark Kent’s transformation into Superman. In the ninth season of “Smallville,” Clark teamed up with members of the JSA, who had been fighting crime for years before Clark and Green Arrow started their superhero journey.

“Superman: Legacy” will feature a younger version of the Man of Steel, focusing on his struggle to balance his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. The film will not delve into the character’s origin story, but rather explore his embodiment of truth, justice, and the American way. Gunn has revealed that the movie will draw inspiration from the critically acclaimed comic book storyline “All-Star Superman” (2005-2008).

The highly anticipated “Superman: Legacy” is set to be released on July 11, 2025. Meanwhile, fans can enjoy Collider’s recent interview with Gunn about his upcoming film “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.”
