J.K. Rowling’s continued denigration of the LGBTQ+ and transgender community has made her a public enemy in many circles, but she has made it clear that she’s too rich to care what people think about her. Even though the recent announcement of an episodic reboot of the Harry Potter universe by HBO Max was met with deafening backlash, she’s still going to earn a lot of money regardless of how many people choose to boycott the show.
A decade ago, Harry Potter was almost universally beloved, an IP that spanned feature films, video games, theme park attractions, studio tours, and other methods of generating revenue. While that’s still true, Rowling’s views have placed fans in an ethical conflict by finding their love of the franchise being counteracted by its creator’s questionable beliefs.
Despite this, there are still many people out there who adore Rowling’s work even if they don’t support her views. However, she responded to a critic by indicating that she doesn’t care if nobody likes her because the royalty checks will keep coming in.
To paraphrase an age-old chant from the terraces; “She’s J.K. Rowling, nobody likes her, she doesn’t care.”
