It’s ‘Bigger Than Anything We’ve Done’

David Harbour gave Stranger Things fans a few hints about what to expect from the hit series’ mind-flaying conclusion in an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.

Harbour revealed the cast was already sent scripts for the upcoming season, which he described as “terrific, as per usual.” The drafts were handed out prior to the commencement of the ongoing writers’ strike, which has delayed production on the Netflix hit’s conclusion.

“It’ll take a while to shoot, which will be tough since we can’t get started yet, but it is what it is,” Harbour said. “I’m excited to go back. I’m excited to wrap it up in a bold, amazing way, and I’m excited to really swing with this character. Because you know that they’re really going to pay off these OG characters — Eleven, Hopper, Will, Joyce, Mike — they’re going to pay them off in big ways, because they’ve lived with you for the past eight years.”

In terms of the upcoming season’s storyline, Harbour vaguely commented on what viewers can expect: “You’ve got to imagine where it starts after Season 4 ended,” harking back to the season’s final moments.

Warning: Spoilers for the end of Stranger Things Season 4 below.

The end of Season 4, Episode 9 saw Joyce and Hopper reunite with their kids, though the joy is short-lived when particulate matter from the Upside Down begins to shower down on reality, hinting that Vecna’s wrath is far from over. “We’re going to start somewhere after that, so you’ve got to imagine that the world is a different place,” Harbour continued.

The actor added that he has yet to read the script for the show’s grand finale, but he does have an idea of how the show ends: “I know where we net out, and it’s very very moving,” Harbour said cautiously, being sure not to blurt out any spoilers. “That is the one word I will use.”

Last year, the official Stranger Things account on X, formerly known as Twitter, posted a sneak peek at the front page of one script for the first episode of the last season. Called “The Crawl,” fans took to the comment section with speculation about what the two-word title could be referring to.

One account posted a screenshot of a Wikipedia entry for a “dungeon crawl,” suggesting the name could be a play on a video game style labyrinth. Considering the heavy influence of ’80s video games on the series — including but not limited to the show’s deliberate Dungeons & Dragons references — we wouldn’t put it past the Duffer Brothers.

“It’s a hell of an undertaking, too,” he went on. “I mean, the set pieces and the things in the scripts that we saw are bigger than anything we’ve done in the past.”

And Season 4 was already pretty big. Plus, Harbour’s comments could be further indication of a vaster, RPG-inspired setting. But between production delays and the time required to build the fictional world of Season 5, eager viewers will be waiting for some time before new episodes arrive on Netflix.

An official Season 5 release date has yet to be announced, though if it’s anything like the near two-year turnaround with previous seasons, it’ll be at least another year.

“Both my projects got pushed indefinitely as a result of the writer’s strike,” Harbour said, acknowledging the current tribulations faced by those on the picketlines. “You know, I’m somebody who got into acting because I needed to act, and I haven’t acted in like seven months now. And that really makes me insane. It’s really important for me to have that expression — to have that relationship to the world.”

Most recently, Harbour starred in director Neill Blomkamp’s “Gran Turismo,” where he portrays racecar coach Jack Salter. Based in part around a true story, Harbour’s character reluctantly extends his mentorship to gamer-turned-driver Jann Mardenborough (Archie Madekwe). The film began its limited theatrical release in the U.S. starting Aug. 11 and will begin to see a wider rollout Aug. 25.
