Ireland has the third-highest internet usage in Europe

Ireland has the third-highest internet usage in Europe behind the Netherlands and Iceland, a study from SEO agency Digital Climax has found.

The company analysed data from Eurostat to compare the percentage of individuals engaged in six selected categories of online activity, and then scored each European country’s online activity score from 0 to 10.

The six categories include percentage of individuals using the internet, those that use the internet weekly or more, those using it for e-commerce, finance or calls and the percentage of households with internet access.

The Netherlands scored 9.01 out of 10, with almost all the population using the internet (99.3%) but only a quarter (27.6%) using it for banking. Iceland (8.82) also had a low proportion using the internet for finance (20.5%) but 84.4% use it for e-commerce.

Ireland placed third with a score of 8.74 out of 10, with 99% of households having internet access and the second-highest proportion (30.3%) among surveyed countries using the internet for their finances.

Ireland also ranked in the top five European countries for individuals using the internet for e-commerce at 82.8%.

The UK (8.42) placed fifth overall and boasts the highest percentage of people using the internet weekly or more (99.5%) and the second-highest for percentage of individuals using the internet (99.6%) after fouth-placed Norway (8.45).

The top 10 was completed by Switzerland (7.84), Denmark (7.68), Sweden (7.14), Luxembourg (7.08), Finland (7.06).

Bosnia and Herzegovina is the least active European country online, scoring just 1.4 out of 10, with 84% of individuals using the internet, the lowest of any country in the study.

“With so many essential services now available online, it is no surprise to see such high percentages for internet access across most European countries,” said Axl Van Steenacker, founder of Digital Climax.

Many of these top-ranking countries surpass the EU average of 90% for Fast Broadband (NGA) coverage, with the Netherlands reporting 99% coverage, which makes it easier for their populations to get online and access these platforms compared to lower ranking countries on the list.

“The EU also has the Open Internet Access Regulation in place, which grants the right to access online content and services without any discrimination or interference.

“It would be good to see these accessibility figures continue to increase in Europe over the next few years, so users can take advantage of this worldwide connectivity and use services like online banking and global communication.”
