IPhone Smuggling: How a man tried to smuggle 68 iPhones by ‘fooling’ Chinese authorities

Smugglers are known for their inventive techniques to transport illegal items across borders, but one man took it to another level when he tried to smuggle 68 iPhones into China. On July 31, the man arrived at Qingdao Port without declaring the iPhones he was carrying, hoping to pass through customs unnoticed. However, authorities grew suspicious of his appearance and attire. Dressed in a navy blue shirt, he seemed oddly proportioned, raising further red flags.

As a result, authorities subjected him to a closer inspection. To their surprise, they discovered that the man had meticulously hidden the 68 iPhones on various parts of his body, including his waist, lower legs, and abdomen. Instead of the latest models, these iPhones were older versions, wrapped and secured with adhesive tape.

The man was promptly arrested for smuggling and now faces charges. The motive behind his elaborate smuggling attempt remains unknown, but it is suspected that he planned to sell the iPhones on the grey market. There is a high demand for older iPhones in the grey market, as people are constantly seeking affordable devices.

This incident is not the first of its kind. Smuggling Apple products, including fake AirPods, has been reported numerous times. In 2017, a woman was caught smuggling 102 iPhones and 15 high-end watches by hiding them in her clothes. Similarly, in 2015, a man was apprehended at the Hong Kong border while trying to smuggle 94 iPhones taped to his body. China has seen many such cases, as importing goods without paying taxes is illegal in the country.
