Inspired by David Fincher’s The Social Network, director Andy Muschietti employed a unique technique to bring two Ezra Millers to the screen for the majority of his upcoming film, The Flash. This process mirrors Fincher’s use of an actor to stand in for Armie Hammer in scenes featuring the Winklevoss twins, with Hammer’s face being digitally replaced. Enter Ed Wade, the actor, dancer, and rugby player who spent seven months acting opposite Miller as his double.
Muschietti recently spoke with Movie Maker about the search for an actor who physically resembled Miller and had chemistry with him. Wade proved to be the perfect choice, excelling at mimicking Miller’s mannerisms and forming a sibling bond with him on set.
Regarding the filming process, Miller primarily portrayed the central and slightly older Barry, while Wade stepped in when the younger Barry had more screen time. Later, Miller filmed the scenes they didn’t initially shoot in front of a massive LED screen known as the “volume.” These additional performances were captured after editing the original scenes to determine which shots to use and streamline the volume capture work.
Wade’s dedication and talent were crucial to the success of the film, according to Muschietti, who praised him as an incredible actor. Hopefully, Wade will receive recognition alongside Miller for their exceptional performances in The Flash.
