PICKENS COUNTY, Ala. (WBRC) – Neighbors and business owners are celebrating a technology milestone this Easter weekend in Pickens County. The county is getting faster internet service thanks to thousands of dollars from Brightspeed.
It’s a big deal in terms of getting business done in a quick and efficient manner, and one business owner in Aliceville knows that first hand.
Business is good but has gotten even better for Food Fare owner Gary Hankins in Aliceville. The reason, Hankins says, is that customers are now able to make their purchases quicker because the internet speed has practically doubled than what it was just two weeks ago in what is the only grocery store in the city.
“Anything we can do to get faster, saving time and time is money,” said Hankins.
In other words, when customers pay for their groceries with a card, the transaction is much quicker.
Benita Moravec noticed it right away.
“It is a whole lot better,” said Moravec.
It’s better because the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs, also known as ADECA, awarded Brightspeed a grant worth more than $388,000 to expand its state-of-the-art fiber broadband network to more homeowners and businesses in Pickens County such as Gary Hankins.
“In some ways it’s a game-changer. Currently, only 66% of Pickens County has access to internet above 25 megabytes, so that’s a huge game-changer for those who live and work there,” said Brent Beal, the Government Affairs Director for Brightspeed.
Speed and efficiency. Getting it done with a swipe, thanks to the marvel of improved technology for Pickens County.
