US millionaire Kyle Bass recently got flak from online users for complaining about inflation by citing his room service bill from a five-star hotel in New York City. Last week, Bass shared a receipt that he received while staying at the posh Carlyle Hotel in Manhattan. As per the bill, Bass ordered a Diet Coke, orange juice, waffles and bacon for breakfast. The food came with added in-room dining charges. The total bill, after taxes, amounted to $85 (approximately Rs 7,000). The investor tagged US President Joe Biden, United States Secretary of the Treasury Janet Yellen and the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System in his X (Formerly Twitter) post and wrote, “Terrible Inflation milestone reached – My first $85 breakfast for one at a NYC hotel. After signing this bill, I have decided NEVER AGAIN.”
In response to Bass’s post, many people argued that the price point of $85 is a standard rate for room-service breakfast at a five-star hotel like Carlyle Hotel. At the Carlyle Hotel, the lowest room rate is $954 (approximately Rs 79,000) and this goes up to $6,244 (approximately Rs 5 lakh) per night. So far, Bass’s post has over 10,000 comments and 7.8 million views.
An X user argued that citing a five-star hotel bill is the wrong way to highlight the issue of inflation and wrote, “Are you seriously complaining about a room service bill and crying inflation? Room service has always cost absurd amounts of money compared to buying that same food elsewhere. It’s like saying the cost of food in an airport costs more because of inflation. Dumb. So dumb.”
Many people also suggested different ways of saving on food bills at five-star properties. An X user wrote, “If you stayed at a Holiday Inn Express the waffles would have been included along with full hot breakfast. You’d have to get out of bed and walk downstairs. Or, you could go to the club at most Marriott properties and find the same. I sense you are a Club Level guy.”
Another wrote, “Imagine blaming the President and the Sec of Treasury because your expensive NYC hotel breakfast was expensive. This was expensive before 2020. It’s been expensive my entire life. You ~can~ just go to the cart on the street like everyone else if it’s an issue.”
