Some Orangeburg County public schools were without internet access earlier this week due to a damaged fiber cable.
Branchville’s Lockett Elementary School as well as the Bethune-Bowman Middle/High School and the Cope Area Career Center all were without internet access from Monday, April 22 through Wednesday, April 24. Connection was restored during the evening of April 24.
Fiber network company Segra, which provides broadband to the schools, said it was alerted April 22 to an internet outage impacting its network in the county.
“Shortly after receiving notice and conducting a thorough analysis, the outage was determined to have been caused by a damaged fiber cable along Old Elloree Road in Orangeburg,” Segra said in a statement.
The company said its teams mobilized and worked to transition services from the damaged fiber leg onto a newer transmission cable route.
