Internet Can’t Cope With Feature Left in Police Station Converted to Studio

A studio apartment that was once part of a police station has gone up for rent with a unique cell-ing point.

The property, located Dudley in the West Midlands region of the U.K. is part of a development of 24 apartments of varying size which were created during the recent conversion of what was once the town’s old police station.

However, it’s this particular ground-floor studio that’s been turning heads online thanks to one rather arresting feature: its very own holding cell.

Described by realtors Taylors as a “fantastic and unusual opportunity” the apartment boasts an open plan modern style kitchen, a three-piece white shower room, a fully working intercom system, and enough space for living, dining and bedroom areas.

Yet it’s the holding cell that has got people talking online after a freelance illustrator posting to X under the handle L4nkyLi4m shared pictures from the listing.

“Obsessed that the old Dudley police station has been converted to studio flats, and for one of the advertised lettings they’ve kept the holding cell as a ‘feature,'” he wrote alongside the images.

The tweet has been viewed six million times, with many reacting with similar surprise to the feature. “I need this for… research purposes,” one X user joked. “Time out bout to be crazy in there,” a second quipped with a third adding: “I know some people who would pay extra for this.”

Though some might think it a bizarre feature, the decision to keep the cell in place is a prime example of what Chris D. Bentley, a broker and the owner of Bentley Fine Properties, describes as renovating the interior of a property’s “lowest level” to add value and drum up interest.

“If you want more living space (or believe potential buyers will), renovate your current home instead of building an addition,” Bentley told Newsweek. “Think of the attic as an extra room—perhaps a gym. Make your home’s cellar into a comfortable gathering spot for the whole family. Buyer interest is increased when a room may be easily transformed to suit a variety of uses.”

A holding cell might be an unusual feature but it would suit a variety of uses, whether the tenant wishes to set up his own personal gym, an area to keep a dog in or simply have a space for storing valuables.

Currently available to rent for £750 ($925) a month, Taylors confirmed to Newsweek that the apartment has already “attracted a lot of interest” and while it is still available to prospective tenants “viewing appointments are currently underway.”

Charlie Tank, Head of Lettings at Taylors, told Newsweek: “This is the first flat I have ever offered ‘to let’ with such an unusual feature, and it is certainly a great talking point. A future tenant could have a lot of fun with it.”
