Meta, the parent company of Facebook, is getting closer to releasing its Twitter competitor through a standalone decentralised social network for sharing text updates. At a companywide meeting, the chief product officer, Chris Cox, gave a sneak peek of the new app, which he referred to as “our response to Twitter”. The upcoming app will use Instagram’s account system to automatically populate a user’s information and will apparently be named Threads, according to internal documents obtained by The Verge. The app will integrate with ActivityPub, an open, decentralised social networking protocol that provides a client/server API for creating, updating, and deleting content. Reportedly, the app aims to provide a safe, reliable, and easy-to-use platform for creators and public figures to build and grow their audiences. Celebrities such as Oprah and the Dalai Lama have already been roped in to use the app.
