Instagram Testing Group-Tagging Feature via Single Mention on Stories: Report

Instagram is on the verge of introducing new features for its users in the near future. The popular social media platform is currently testing a feature that will enable users to tag a group of people on Instagram Stories with just a single mention. With the growing influence of the creator economy on Instagram worldwide, the platform continuously updates its feature set to cater to diverse user needs. As of August this year, the platform boasts over 2.3 billion active users globally.

The head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, recently provided some insights about this upcoming feature on his broadcast channel named ‘IG Updates.’ Mosseri explained that users will soon have the ability to create a group and add multiple followers to it. Instead of individually tagging people on Stories, they will be able to tag the entire group at once.

The group tag will trigger notifications for all members, allowing them to reshare the post on their own Stories.

“We’re currently testing a new way to tag a group of people in a Story using just one mention. Once you create a group mention, anyone in the group can reuse it to automatically tag everyone in any new Stories,” Mosseri explained on his broadcast, as reported by Techlusive.

At this time, there is no specific timeline for the release of this feature. It is possible that it will be initially rolled out in the United States before being available in other regions, as stated in the Techlusive report.

In the previous month, Instagram, which is owned by Meta, unveiled a Twitter-like application called ‘Threads.’ Integrated with users’ Instagram accounts, Threads quickly gained 100 million sign-ups, presenting a formidable competition to Elon Musk’s X (previously known as Twitter). Threads has been introducing new features for its user base, including a chronological ‘Following’ feed on both iOS and Android. In addition, Mosseri has confirmed that a web version of the platform is currently being developed.

As part of Meta’s efforts to embrace Metaverse features across its platforms and services, Meta avatars can now be used during video calls on Instagram and Messenger.

The company is also reportedly testing in-app AI chatbots that will provide users with a choice of at least 30 different personalities.

This October, Instagram will celebrate its 13th anniversary.
