Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri has acknowledged the request for a Threads home feed exclusively featuring posts from accounts users follow. Mosseri responded to YouTuber Marques Brownlee’s post and photographer Noah Kalina’s request, expressing that the feature is “on the list” of desired additions. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg also showed support by posting a thumbs-up emoji in response to Brownlee’s request.
When it comes to Meta’s Twitter counterpart, early user experiences may mirror mine, with home feeds filled with posts from recommended accounts alongside content from chosen accounts. While recommended posts currently outweigh the selected content, it’s challenging to determine if this is due to Threads being newly launched, and onboarding millions of new users.
Although Mosseri and Zuckerberg’s responses do not guarantee the inclusion of the requested feature, Instagram’s main app already offers a similar option with a dedicated “Following” list, indicating that Threads may adopt a comparable approach. However, the default feed in Instagram still consists of recommended content.
Meta has expressed intentions to integrate Threads with ActivityPub, the decentralized social media protocol used by rival microblogging platform Mastodon. This integration aims to allow Threads users to interact with users on other ActivityPub-based services. Additionally, supporting the protocol could potentially enable Threads users to retain their audience if they were ever to leave the platform, as mentioned by Mosseri in an interview with my colleague Alex Heath.
