Instagram co-founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger have unveiled Artifact, a news app powered by artificial intelligence (AI) that delivers a personalized feed. In a new update, Artifact is introducing an AI-powered text-to-speech feature that allows users to listen to news articles in the voices of celebrities.
According to a report by The Verge, Artifact has partnered with Speechify, a mobile and desktop app that uses computer-generated text-to-speech voices to read text aloud. This feature will enable users to listen to news articles in the voices of celebrities such as Snoop Dogg and Gwyneth Paltrow. Artifact offers more than 30 English voices to choose from.
To enable the text-to-speech player, users simply need to tap on the “play” icon at the bottom bar while reading an article. They can adjust the reading speed and select the voice they want to hear. The audio will continue playing in the background even if the user navigates to other parts of Artifact or leaves the app. Initially, this feature will be available on Apple iOS, with an Android rollout expected in the next few days.
Artifact curates news from a variety of publishers, including The New York Times and niche blogs. The app presents a feed of popular articles, similar to Reels and TikTok for videos. When a user selects an article, Artifact prioritizes similar posts and stories. The app also leverages AI to summarize articles, explain content, and rewrite clickbait headlines using OpenAI’s GPT-4 large language model.
