French space sector firm Promethee has announced its collaboration with Indian start-up Skyroot Aerospace to explore the possibility of using Skyroot’s Vikram-series of launch vehicles to place its nanosatellites in orbit. The decision was made after discussions between Skyroot co-founder Pawan Kumar Chandana and Promethee President Olivier Piepsz during the official visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to France.
The collaboration between Promethee and Skyroot will focus on integrating Skyroot’s Vikram launcher into the deployment process of the Japetus earth observation constellation. Promethee, known for its expertise in nanosatellite constellations for earth observation, was founded in January 2020 by Piepsz and Giao-Minh Nguyen, bringing together experts in space, digital, and services.
Skyroot Aerospace, headquartered in Hyderabad, made history last year with the successful launch of its Vikram-S rocket, becoming the first privately built space rocket in India within a short span of four years since its establishment. The company, founded by former scientists and engineers from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), is now developing three variants of the Vikram series of rockets specifically designed to deploy small satellites.
The three variants of the Vikram rocket include Vikram-I, with a payload capacity of 480 kilograms to Low Earth Orbit, Vikram-II with a payload capacity of 595 kilograms, and Vikram-III, capable of launching payloads weighing 815 kilograms to 500 km Low Inclination Orbit.
