ChatGPT is currently one of the most popular applications in the technology industry. It has not only attracted internet users but also hackers seeking to steal personal information for financial gain. A cybersecurity firm based in Singapore has recently identified 101,134 devices infected with stealers that have saved ChatGPT credentials. These compromised credentials are now being sold on the dark web, where users’ personal data was stolen through malware.
According to Group-IB’s Threat Intelligence platform, the number of available logs containing compromised ChatGPT accounts reached a peak of 26,802 in May 2023. With more employees using ChatGPT to optimize their work, the platform stores the history of user queries and AI responses. This means that if a user has used ChatGPT for confidential or sensitive information, it can be stored and exploited for targeted attacks against companies and their employees.
India top targeted country
Group-IB’s findings reveal that the Asia-Pacific region had the highest concentration of ChatGPT credentials (40.5%) being offered for sale between June 2022 and May 2023. Out of the total compromised credentials, 40,999 were from the Asia-Pacific region, followed by 24,925 from the Middle East and Africa, 16,951 from Europe, and 12,314 from Latin America. In terms of countries, India topped the list with 12,632 compromised credentials, followed by Pakistan (9,217), Brazil (6,531), Vietnam (4,771), Egypt (4,588), the United States (2,995), France (2,923), Morocco (2,647), Indonesia (2,555), and Bangladesh (2,463).
How to safeguard
To mitigate the risks associated with compromised ChatGPT accounts, users are advised to regularly update their passwords. Additionally, it is recommended not to enter sensitive data or customer information on chatbots.
