IMAX Tried to Help But Paramount Wouldn’t Budge

The Big Picture

  • Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One received rave reviews, but faced tough competition from Oppenheimer and Barbie, resulting in a shortage of large format screens.
  • IMAX attempted to convince Paramount to change the release date of Dead Reckoning Part One to maximize IMAX returns, but the studio refused.
  • Paramount’s decision may turn out to be an expensive mistake, as Oppenheimer broke IMAX records and continues to sell out globally.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One arrived in theaters amidst great anticipation, with rave reviews and a star-studded cast led by the highly successful Tom Cruise. However, the film faced tough competition from Oppenheimer and Barbie, resulting in its underperformance and potential financial losses for Paramount.

In the case of Mission: Impossible, the competition from Oppenheimer was particularly significant. Previous films starring Tom Cruise, such as Top Gun: Maverick and Fallout, had enjoyed success on premium large format screens, particularly IMAX. However, due to an exclusive deal with filmmaker Christopher Nolan, Mission was only given one week on IMAX screens before the release of Oppenheimer. IMAX had urged Paramount to change the release date of Dead Reckoning Part One for better IMAX returns, but the studio declined.

Bruce Markoe, the head of IMAX post-production, revealed in an interview with Forbes that IMAX had requested Paramount to consider changing the release date of Dead Reckoning Part One to ensure a dedicated run on IMAX screens and maximize its box office performance.
