IMAX-Shot Epic Showcased in Action-Packed 5-Minute Video

Just a week before the highly anticipated release of Christopher Nolan’s new thriller, Oppenheimer, a five-minute preview has been unveiled, offering viewers an in-depth look into the epic and devastating story of one man’s quest to create a weapon that could potentially lead to apocalyptic conflict in the 20th century. The film is set to hit theaters on July 21, 2023.

The American Prometheus

Written and directed by Nolan, the mastermind behind hits like Inception and Interstellar, Oppenheimer is a visually stunning IMAX® production that immerses audiences in the brilliant mind and destructive work of J. Robert Oppenheimer. As the man who risked the world’s destruction to save it from the Axis powers during World War II, Oppenheimer’s story is brought to life on the big screen with Cillian Murphy playing the titular role and Emily Blunt as his wife, Katherine Oppenheimer, a biologist and botanist. The film also features Matt Damon as General Leslie Groves Jr, the confident director of the Manhattan Project, and Robert Downey Jr as Lewis Strauss, a commissioner of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission.

The new five-minute preview opens with a black and white shot of Robert Downey Jr as Strauss, amidst an eerie hum, making his way into a room filled with several men, including Oppenheimer. He informs them about the Russians possessing a bomb, marking the beginning of the Cold War, a conflict hinging on the possession and potential use of nuclear weapons by the United States and Russia after World War II. Strauss reveals that the Manhattan Project, which established the U.S. as the first nation to create and utilize a nuclear weapon, was intended to be a secret. However, leaked information has now exposed the nuclear secret, with potentially catastrophic consequences.

Strauss’s question, “What were you guys doing in Los Alamos?” sets the central theme of the film, as the preview showcases the work done on the Manhattan Project in the New Mexico desert. The preview unfolds, highlighting the immense scale of the project and the catastrophic consequences of its success. While Oppenheimer’s mission was to save the world from Axis powers by creating a weapon to end World War II, he simultaneously provided humanity with a weapon capable of destroying the entire planet.

The new preview encourages viewers to contemplate the unimaginable and grapple with Oppenheimer’s own inner struggle between scientific progress and the potential for human annihilation. Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, the film delves into Oppenheimer’s life and his remarkable undertaking, the Manhattan Project. Renowned as one of America’s greatest scientific minds, Oppenheimer’s legacy has been obscured by infamy and secrecy, but this summer, audiences will have the opportunity to get to know the man behind the explosive work.

Produced by Emma Thomas, Charles Roven, and Nolan, the film also features a stellar cast including Rami Malek, Florence Pugh, Benny Safdie, Michael Angarano, Josh Hartnett, and Kenneth Branagh, among others.

Oppenheimer debuts in theaters on July 21. Check out the new preview below.
