Ideas Wanted: Capcom Explores Potential for New Mega Man Games

Mega Man holds a rich and illustrious legacy in the world of video games, even acknowledged by its creator, Capcom. During a recent shareholder’s meeting, the gaming company recognized Mega Man as one of its historic franchises, greatly cherished by fans. However, since series designer Keiji Inafune’s departure, there has been a significant decline in Mega Man’s presence, with the last mainline game release in 2018 and the last major console appearance of Mega Man X way back in 2005.

But fear not, Mega Man enthusiasts! Capcom assures fans that they are still actively contemplating the future of the series. This also includes revisiting older favorites like Sengoku Basara and Onimusha.

“We are carefully considering the approach to developing new entries in the series, which involves factors such as solid conceptualization, innovative ideas, and captivating gameplay,” states Capcom.

In the wake of Capcom’s statements, Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection hit a milestone, surpassing 1 million units sold since its release in April. Additionally, Capcom exhibited Mega Man X Dive Offline at the recent Capcom Showcase, unveiling plans for its launch on Steam, iOS, and Android.

Mega Man’s extraordinary journey traces back to the NES era, where it propelled Capcom to prominence as a key player on the platform. Over the ensuing years, Capcom introduced numerous sequels and spin-offs, which triggered some criticism due to the abundance of Mega Man games.

Inafune’s departure from Capcom in 2010 resulted in the cancellation of several projects, including the highly anticipated Mega Man Legends 3. Since then, Mega Man has predominantly made appearances in retro collections and mobile titles, with the notable exception of the moderately well-received Mega Man 11. Inafune’s attempt to recreate the magic of Mega Man with Mighty No. 9 was famously unsuccessful.

Meanwhile, in preparation for its release on July 14, Capcom is gearing up for Exoprimal, a thrilling multiplayer game that pits humans in exosuits against dinosaurs.
