Hunter x Hunter director Hiroshi Koujina recently attended the Nippon Anime & Film Culture Association event, where he spoke about the challenges facing the anime industry, such as the number of available animators and the training opportunities they get.
As reported by Full Frontal (thanks, Comicbook), Koujina noted that the anime industry is growing larger with each passing year, with a good deal of new anime coming out. However, there is a shortage of animators in the industry. How? Well, that’s because animators move from one studio to another, which means that they may be busy working on other productions at a different studio. Koujina admitted that this is a good way to make more money, but these animators get promoted “too quickly” and don’t get enough time to get trained in the craft.
The main issue, according to Koujina, is that there are not many “training and development opportunities” for animators. Remote work is also cited as a reason that causes problems in communication, and it’s difficult to give precise guidance when the person is not physically present.
Another guest at the event, director Seiji Mizushima, who has worked on anime such as the original Fullmetal Alchemist adaptation and Mobile Suit Gundam 00, added that workers getting promotions quickly also cause them to burn out faster.
Recently, there has been a lot of talk about how people work in the anime industry and the overall situation of the industry. Masao Maruyama, who helped start Madhouse and MAPPA, said in an interview that focusing a lot on commercialisation is becoming a big problem for anime. Additionally, there have been many rumours and discussions about how workers are treated at MAPPA.
