The head of Huawei Technologies’ consumer business, Richard Yu, announced at the company’s annual developer conference in Dongguan that Huawei’s handset business is making a remarkable comeback. In the second quarter, Huawei’s market share in the domestic smartphone industry grew by 76.1 percent, securing the second spot in the high-end sector.
Counterpoint Research indicates that Huawei captured 11.3 percent of the overall China market in the same period, placing it behind Vivo and Apple. The research firm attributed Huawei’s impressive growth to the resolution of product shortages, enabling the company to resume normal product launches.
Previous restrictions imposed by the US on US-made technology severely impacted Huawei’s ability to produce advanced 4G handsets, resulting in a significant decline in its market share both domestically and internationally. Despite these challenges, Huawei has denied the security risk accusations made by the US and European governments.
Yu further highlighted the progress made by Huawei’s in-house Harmony operating system, which has overcome numerous obstacles over the past four years. He revealed that the system now boasts 2.2 million developers.
Research firms have recently speculated that Huawei will resume the production of 5G smartphones by the end of the year by acquiring chips domestically, despite the ongoing US restrictions. However, Huawei declined to comment on these reports.
