How To Quickly Find A Campsite Or RV Park For The Total Solar Eclipse—Before It’s Too Late

If you’re yet to plan a trip to experience the total solar eclipse occurring across North America on April 8, you have less than five months to make a plan—but it’s not too late.

The rare sight of the sun’s corona—its wispy outer atmosphere—will be visible from within a 125-mile wide path of totality stretching from the Pacific coast of northwestern Mexico to Atlantic Canada via 15 U.S. states.

Everyone else in the U.S. will see just a regular partial solar eclipse, which has caused thousands to make plans and book-up hotels, RV parks and campsites in the path.

Path Of Totality For The Total Solar Eclipse 2024

The U.S. states crossed by the path of totality comprise Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.

However, it’s no use just being in that state—you have to be inside the path of totality. With hotels mostly booked up, camping is the easiest choice.

Where To Camp and RV For The Total Solar Eclipse 2024

There are a lot of public and private campgrounds in the path of totality. The campsites listed below were sourced from Campspot’s helpful

page for places with availability. It’s updated regularly with campsites that have availability. I have no affiliation with Campspot whatsoever—it’s just such an excellent resource for travel planning for this eclipse. Here are just a few that still have space:

Why To Camp and RV For The Total Solar Eclipse 2024

Aside from much better availability than hotels—and affordability—there are some reasons to consider camping or staying in an RV park as your top choice. “It gets you away from the city lights, immerses you in nature, and provides an unobstructed view of this cosmic phenomenon,” said Erin Stender, CMO at Campspot, in an email.

“It’s a front-row seat to the celestial event of a lifetime and whether you’re looking for a tent site, RV site or glamping accommodations, there are a variety of options still available to book at campgrounds in the path of totality, many of which are busy planning themed on-site events and activities for their eclipse visitors.”

When Is The Next Eclipse

A total solar eclipse won’t happen again in the U.S. until 2044 and 2045, when two will occur in successive years, first in Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota, and then across the nation from California to Florida.

I’m an expert on eclipses—the editor of WhenIsTheNextEclipse.com and author of The Complete Guide To The Great North American Eclipse of April 8, 2024. For the very latest on April 8, 2024’s total solar eclipse—including travel and lodging options—check my main feed for new articles.

Wishing you clear skies and wide eyes.
