Get ready for some Hellfire Gala and Iron Man spoilers, but before we dive into that, let’s discuss the history of Orchis, Krakoa, and the X-Men. In House Of X #3, published four years ago, we learn about the Omega Cycle. This process involves transforming a human into a sentinel or hiding a sentinel within a human until it’s time to use them to eliminate mutants – the ultimate goal of Sentinels.
In Powers Of X, we glimpsed Moira Mactaggert’s various future lives, where mutants fell to humans, machines, and aliens. The suggestion is that the reality where mutants create the nation of Krakoa is the one that gives them the best chance of surviving the impending apocalypse. Enter Orchis, a team of human scientists from various organizations like SHIELD, AIM, ARMOR, STRIKE, SWORD, HAMMER, Alpha Flight, Hydra, and more. They developed their own Sentinel technology, including Nimrod, which was previously only seen in the far future.
Karima Shapandar, the Omega Sentinel, was once a police officer from India transformed into an Omega Prime Sentinel by Bastion’s Operation: Zero Tolerance program. She discovered that she was a Prime Sentinel – humans turned into Sentinels and programmed to act as sleeper agents until a nearby mutant activates them. After her tech was removed, she returned to her human state. However, in House Of X, her sentinel programming was reactivated, and she joined Orchis on a mission to the Orchis Forge space station.
It is revealed that Karima Shapandar has traveled back in time to change the future. The mutants were victorious, creating a utopia where they thrive, and the humans and machines suffered defeat. Karima’s mission is to alter this reality and create a new timeline for the Marvel Universe. Along the way, she has been busy creating her own version of Nimrod with the help of Erasmus Mendel from Orchis.
Orchis has been in direct opposition to Krakoa and has recently enlisted the help of several individuals, including Doctor Stasis, Feilong, Dr. Moira Mactaggert (X), Abigail Brand, Mother Righteous, The Hordeculture, Inferno #1 The Coven Akkaba, and MODOK. They are aware of the Sins Of Sinister future timeline and have taken steps to neutralize Arakko, create Stark Sentinels, develop nanotechnology to cure mutants, and distribute Krakoan medicines with a harmful trigger.
In the Hellfire Gala, Orchis executes their plan by attacking Krakoa. They use the Captain Krakoa suit to assault the US government, blame mutants for the attack, and distract the Avengers from the Gala. They also deploy Stark Sentinels, resulting in the death of numerous new X-Men members. Orchis takes control of the Krakoan teleportation gateways, shuts down Majik’s teleportation powers, and even threatens the human population with infected Krakoan medicines if they do not surrender.
Amidst the chaos, Karima Shapandar forms an alliance with Doctor Stasis, hinting at a significant development in the works. The Fall of X is upon us, and the mutants must prepare for the worst. In Invincible Iron Man #8, Iron Man faces off against the Stark Sentinels during the Gala, with Emma Frost making a guest appearance.
