How ‘The Marvels’ Is a Different Kind of MCU Film

The Big Picture

  • Nia DaCosta, the director of The Marvels, acknowledges the presence of superhero fatigue but believes that the film can stand out with its unique and vibrant tone and unseen worlds.
  • The Marvels features a distinctive team-up within the narrative, different from the ensemble seen in Avengers movies, aiming to provide relatable female characters from various backgrounds.
  • The Marvels will bring together three characters Captain Marvel, Monica Rambeau, and Ms. Marvel – in a cohesive story, with the filmmakers carefully selecting which parts of their journeys to showcase. The film also includes returning and new cast members.

Marvel Studios’ and Disney’s The Marvels will soon soar as the latest chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Director Nia DaCosta has now shared her insights on how the film differs from other MCU entries and how it can make its mark in the midst of superhero fatigue in today’s movie landscape.

In a recent interview with Total Film, DaCosta stated, “I do believe superhero fatigue exists.” However, she also highlighted the aspects of The Marvels that set it apart from the rest of the MCU, which has often been criticized for being derivative and formulaic. According to DaCosta, the key distinction in The Marvels lies in its tone:

“The biggest difference from the other MCU movies to date is that it’s really wacky and silly. The worlds we explore in this movie are unlike anything you’ve seen in the MCU. They are bright, vibrant worlds that are completely new.”

This sentiment was echoed by the film’s executive producer, Mary Livanos, who described The Marvels as featuring a different kind of team-up. Livanos said, “The Avengers movies provide epic conclusions to chapters of storytelling, whereas this is a team-up within the narrative that we didn’t expect for Marvel. Typically, characters come together in Avengers movies. We were thrilled to create a team-up that showcases characters relatable to women from diverse backgrounds.”

The Marvels Will Feature a Triple Team of Characters

The sequel to 2019’s Captain Marvel, The Marvels stars Brie Larson reprising her role as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel. However, this time the film will be highlighted by two co-stars joining Larson on her adventures: Teyonah Parris, who reprises her role as S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Monica Rambeau from the Disney+ series WandaVision, and Iman Vellani, making her film debut as the cosmic energy-wielding Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel after portraying the character in the Disney+ series Ms. Marvel.

DaCosta previously discussed how The Marvels aimed to incorporate all three characters into a cohesive story, saying, “We put a lot of thought into how to give each of these incredible heroes their own space in a two-hour film. We carefully considered which parts of their journeys to showcase.” While specific plot details remain under wraps, DaCosta’s remarks indicate that The Marvels intends to stand on its own, as is typical of Marvel films.

The Marvels also features Samuel L. Jackson reprising his role as Nick Fury, as well as Zawe Ashton as the Kree warrior Dar-Benn and Park Seo-joon. Lashana Lynch also returns as the late Maria Rambeau from Captain Marvel. The film was directed by DaCosta, who co-wrote the screenplay with Elissa Karasik and Megan McDonnell. Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige served as the producer, with executive producers including Mary Livanos, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Matthew Jenkins, and Jonathan Schwartz for Marvel.

The Marvels will be released by Disney on November 10, 2023. Watch the film’s trailer below:
